Death Magnetic release date

According to Finland's Record Shop X, the Finnish release date for the new METALLICA album, "Death Magnetic", is Wednesday, September 17. Iron Maiden Tribute CD by Kerrang!

We were honored to be asked to participate in Kerrang's exclusive “Maiden Heaven” tribute album . . . one of those super cool Kerrang! CD's that you can only get when you buy the mag. In this case, the issue (# 1219) goes on sale in the UK on July 16 and for those of you somewhere else, you can pick it up online at http://www.kerrang.com.

We picked “Remember Tomorrow” from Iron Maiden's self titled first album . . . it was basically the blueprint for songs like “Fade to Black” and “Sanitarium” and when we were jamming our way thru most of our favorite early Maiden songs, this one stood out and also came together somewhat effortlessly. . . we had a blast recording it at HQ in the middle of all the insanity of the last two weeks of finishing the new album back in May. Some of our other favorite bands recorded their own versions of Maiden songs too . . . Machine Head, Trivium, Avenged Sevenfold, Coheed And Cambria, Dream Theater to name a few. There are more details in the current issue of Kerrang! or on their site . . . or check out the "official" press release below.

Metallica Comment on pulled Reviews

Metallica have commented on the new album reviews which were pulled off the net for unknown reasons which were decided by Metallica's management, not the band themselves. Here is what the band have stated on the official Metallica site:

While we occasionally enjoy reading the various comments, rumors, speculation, reviews, gossip and all the good that the internet brings, rarely do we feel the desire/need to respond to the "blogosphere" . . . hey, everyone is entitled to have their thoughts and opinions, right? However, once we re-surfaced on Tuesday after a few weeks on tour in Europe, we were informed that someone at Q Prime (our managers) had made the error of asking a few publications to take down reviews of the rough mixes from the new record that were posted on their sites. Our response was "WHY?!!! Why take down mostly positive reviews of the new material and prevent people from getting psyched about the next record. . . that makes no sense to us!”" So after a few rounds of managerial ear spank and sentencing everyone at Q Prime to 20 push-ups each, we figured why not take matters into our own hands and just post the links here on our site. Kerrang, Metal Hammer, The Quietus.

You see, we have maintained an "in the press" section here on Metallica.com for many years now, posting links to reviews of shows, album and DVD releases, and various other tidbits we've come across while surfing around. Some good, some not so good, but we put 'em all up . . . sort of the same way we treat our message boards on this site . . . welcoming all feedback.

So in the spirit of keeping this section current, we've put as many of the reviews of the rough mixes of the new record up here as we could find. If we missed any, let us know . . . and in the meantime, we're always adding, so peruse at your leisure.

Well, almost! Today (Wed June 04) Metallica’s management flew into London to exclusively play almost finished tracks from the San Francisco giant’s new studio album.

Set for a release in late August / early September, the as-yet-untitled album is in the final stages of mixing. Recorded with Rick Rubin, the album will feature 10 tracks and clock in at around the 75-minute mark.

The album has been described as “nine epics and one song”, with each of the nine tracks being between six to eight minutes in length. Like the recent Death Cab For Cutie single, the first release is eight minutes in length.

On first impressions and just one listen, Rock Sound can confirm that the songs we’ve heard sound very much like classic Metallica in vibe, harking back to the days of ‘Master Of Puppets’, ‘…And Justice For All’ (but with bass) and ‘The Black Album’ – without sounding dated or tired.

Of the six tracks Rock Sound heard this afternoon, only one had a working title – ‘Flamingo’. With a slow intro, the song was reminiscent of ‘Battery’ in vibe, with two guitar solos and an undercurrent of melody and groove.

The first single is an epic power rocker in the vein of ‘The Unforgiven’, ‘Nothing Else Matters’ and ‘Sanatorium’, with a mid-tempo, head-banging section and some Thin Lizzy-esque twin guitar riffage.

Another song features the lyrics, “Into abyss, you don’t exist, you can’t resist the Judas kiss”; another features an almost RATM-esque drum ‘n’ bass undercurrent and lyrics about “suicide” and cyanide”; while the final song we heard, dubbed “The Song”, clocks in at under five minutes and is a galloping thrash attack with quirks, and a sniff of Testament about it!

We suspect other song titles could include, ‘Die Hard’, ‘Show Your Scars’, and ‘My Apocalypse’ – but we cannot be held responsible if none of these titles or lyrics are accurate!

Thankfully – there are plenty of Kirk Hammett traditional guitar solos and a decent drum sound. Hetfield’s voice sounds in fine form too. All of the songs have many different parts to them, giving the impression that the quartet is revisiting the epic vibe of the band’s ‘classic’ period.

To avoid recording the songs, Mr Ulrich had demanded all mobile phones were left at the door. However, nobody noticed Rock Sound’s mini-disc under our flat cap…

Without doubt, the biggest metal event this year is going to be the release of Metallica’s new album, and everyone at Metal Hammer has been hit with feverish anticipation, having been invited to hear six tracks. Well, we’ve just gotten back, and we can answer you this:

Is it St Anger? No.

Does it suck? Fuck no!

Are the solos back? Fuck yes!

Does it sound like the pre-Load Metallica of yore? Mostly, but while the tracks we’ve heard call to mind some old albums, most of them clock in around the seven-minute mark, each one containing a number of different sections, so the band don’t settle on any one riff for long. Bottom line? These songs are going to sound amazing live.

And how’s Lars Ulrich’s snare doing? Well, it’s definitely there but then we weren’t listening to mastered versions, so there’s still hope that they won’t end up sounding like they did on an album that rhymes with Faint, uh… Banger.

What else? There’s no album title yet, and there are no individual song titles, but the album’s been referred to as ‘nine epics and one song’, with ten tracks adding up to a total of 75 minutes. You do the math.

What do the songs sound like? Track one, which is only known by the cryptic working-title Flamingo opens up on thunderous rolling drums as lead guitar meets them head on, a flaring up in stop-start motion before it pulls itself together in rushes forward in classic thrash style, all crunching, Fight Fire With Fire riffs and drilling beats. It takes at least two minutes for James Hetfield’s vocals to come in, and while they sound furious, this isn’t the grittiest he’s ever sounded, more open in tone, but while there’s still a memorable vocal line for the ‘chorus’, and there is so much going on in the song, and so many ideas thrown in and discarded for the next one that it’s hard on first listen to pick out one riff that you’re going to remember it by. But with galloping riffs and the return of guitar breaks rising up from out of the grooves you can hear the true Metallica spirit, even though its as if reflected in mirrored mosaic.

Track two is at heart an anthemic ballad that recalls Fight Fire With Fire and Nothing Else Matters, with a chiming guitar intro, airy vocals and some slightly convoluted, progressive-style bridges that mutate into urgent riffing, more galloping riffs and guitar solos. Again, the song has a number of different sections, but it still sounds massive.

Track three kicks off on a stop-start riff flecked with Eastern touches, as other bustling guitar lines play off each other and Hetfield’s vocals retain the power of old, like some monolithic prophet overlooking events as mid-paced, chugging riffs come in, sounding like an army on the march, methodically shooting anyone in their path.

Track four is reminiscent of Master Of Puppets with more than a touch of heads-down Slayer pacing thrown in. After an artillery-lobbing drum-led intro, it quickly sets off on marching, thrash mode, Hetfield’s spat vocals taking melodic digressions, as he roars ‘Bow down, surrender unto me’. The song’s groove carries you along as it opens up into guitar atomospherics that bring Led Zep to mind. It isn’t quite the kind of irresistible monster they’ve created before, but Metallica still prove they can still sound lean and epic at the same time, and when the track drops out into the grove mid-way though, you can imagine the chants coming from the crowds live.

Track five has another strong opening, with an uncharacteristic bouncing groove not a million miles away from Rage Against The Machine making appearances throughout setting off sharp riffs that come up against an irregular barrage of percussion that sets it off briefly on a more melodic path and builds up once again into a thrilling riff-fest mayhem.

Track six is the ‘song’, considerably shorter than the others, but full of clinically sharp riffing, more Slayer-esque parts and galloping grooves, all hustle and bustle with a tinge of Eastern melody thrown in once more.

Initial impressions is that this is an album that’s going to get our blood chugging, but whether it’s all we hoped for is going to take more plays to answer. Ultimately we’re hugely relieved and pretty damn thrilled, and we can’t fucking wait to hear the rest. Horns up. [/CODE]

Metallica @ Pinkpop Holland video's, pics and a new game!

Earlier this year, Activision unveiled Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, the first installment in its billion-dollar rhythm series based entirely on a band. No sooner had the publisher announced the deal than speculation began to spread about what the second band-based Guitar Hero game would be. Along with Van Halen, the most mentioned group was Metallica, the legendary San Francisco Bay Area heavy-metal quartet.

Now, talk of Guitar Hero: Metallica is no longer a case of wishful thinking or idle speculation--it's fact. When sifting through an SEC filing of Activision's over the weekend, Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst Edward Woo--associate of the highly visible Michael Pachter--uncovered a gem in the section where the Santa Monica, California-based publisher discussed its upcoming game slate.

"In fiscal 2009, we plan to publish Guitar Hero: On Tour for the NDS; Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, Guitar Hero: Metallica, and Guitar Hero IV across multiple platforms," the company said in its report. Activision's fiscal year ends on March 31, 2009, which means that the game will likely follow the holiday release of Guitar Hero: World Tour (nee Guitar Hero 4).

Guitar Hero: Metallica will be the first time a game based on the multiplatinum-selling band--which has become only slightly less famous for its antipiracy efforts as its musical achievements--has made it to retail. However, it is the second such game to be announced. In 2003, Vivendi Games--which will soon merge with Activision--struck a deal to create a vehicular combat game inspired by Metallica's music. Unconfirmed reports stated that the project had been quietly canceled in 2005.

No more warner bros?

The Pulse of Radio reports that METALLICA's future with its record label, Warner Bros. Records, may not extend past the release of the band's ninth studio album this fall. According to Bloomberg.com, Edgar Bronfman Jr., CEO of the Warner Music Group, of which Warner Bros. Records is a division, declined to comment on the status of contract negotiations with the band during a quarterly conference call earlier this month. The new METALLICA album is the band's last under its current contract with the label, which dates back to 1984 when the quartet first signed with Warner subsidiary Elektra Records.

METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich told The Pulse of Radio that finishing out its recording contract was a liberating experience for the band. "It's awesome," he said. "I mean, to be out of your record contract, it's exciting just because of, what are the new — and that's not anything disrespectful about the great bunch of people up at Warner Bros. Records. But it's just exciting to be able to communicate directly with your fans, and having the opportunities to do it, you know. I think that's really exciting."

Iron Maiden Tribute CD Kerrang!

In this case, the issue (# 1219) goes on sale in the UK on July 16 and for those of you somewhere else, you can pick it up online at Kerrang.com

"Iron Maiden are 10% cooler than every other band!" Lars Ulrich, Metallica.

Kerrang! team up with Metallica, Machine Head, Trivium, Avenged Sevenfold and more for an a world exclusive, all star Iron Maiden tribute album!

15 of Kerrang!'s favourite bands have come together to pay tribute to the planet's greatest metal band - Iron Maiden!

Following on from our 2006 Kerrang! Remastered CD in honour of Metallica's Master Of Puppets, this latest collection - Maiden Heaven - features bands covering tracks from Iron Maiden's legendary career, and will be given away free in Kerrang! issue 1219 on sale July 16.

The CD includes world exclusive performances from Metallica, Machine Head, Trivium, Avenged Sevenfold, Coheed And Cambria, Gallows and more!

Chatting exclusively to Kerrang!, Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich tells the readers how much respect the Bay Area thrashers have for the Brit metal legends.

"Iron Maiden are 10% cooler than every other band," says Ulrich. "From their relationship with their fans, to their album covers to their stages, to their live presentation, to their photos - whatever they did was always cooler than what everyone else did! I have always had an incredible amount of respect and admiration for them and obviously getting a chance to be part of this CD feels that that has come a full circle. We played Remember Tomorrow as it was basically the blueprint for songs like Fade To Black and Welcome Home (Sanitarium), and some of the more epic ballady type of songs that Metallica had done later. We had so much fun with this!"

Machine Head frontman Robb Flynn is equally excited to be a part of this project.

"When I was a kid Iron Maiden were a very big deal to me and the influence they had on Machine Head has been huge," he reveals. "We decided to cover Hallowed Be Thy Name for this CD because it's just such a great song, in fact it's a classic. I just love the way the vocal line goes up and down, so dramatic. If someone who'd never heard them wanted to know what Iron Maiden sounded like I'd point them in the direction of Hallowed Be Thy Name."

Metal heroes Trivium are happy to admit their own brand of heavy tunes could never have existed without Maiden's worldwide influence.

"Iron Maiden helped create what we know as heavy metal," states frontman Matt Heafy. "Their influence can be heard on classic and contemporary bands alike; their fan base spans across the youngest and newest of heavy music recruits all the way to the diehard, life-long metal elite. We chose to play the track Iron Maiden, as the song that screamed out our love for them musically, and we knew it would be a really fun song to jam out in the studio. It was an honour to be able to play one of Iron Maiden's tracks and have the opportunity to contribute to this amazing CD. We hope everyone has as much fun listening to it as we did making it!"

Meanwhile, Avenged Sevenfold - who have been picked to support Maiden at their upcoming Twickenham Stadium show on July 5 - say they are "honoured" to be part of this Kerrang! tribute. "Maiden are by far the best live band in the world and their music is timeless," says vocalist M Shadows. "This also gives us a chance to expose this great song to some of our younger fans who maybe aren't as familiar with Iron Maiden."

UK hardcore punk rockers Gallows chose to contribute a version of Wrathchild to the collection.

"We're actually all huge Maiden fans and while learning Wrathchild we discovered a new found respect for the band as musicians," says guitarist Laurent Barnard. "Some of their riffs are pretty fast and Steve Harris has definitely earned his place as a bass legend! We're so happy we were asked to be included!"

This Kerrang! Maiden Heaven CD's arrival coincides with the band's European leg of their Somwhere Back In Time World Tour - and follows on from the release of their own collection Somewhere Back In Time: The Best Of 80 -89.

"Maiden much appreciate and are very flattered by all the time spent on this by a lot of great bands," says Iron Maiden's manager Rod Smallwood, "and would like to thank them, and also Kerrang!, for the honour. Thanks everyone!"

Metallica to play Berlin?

According to Metallicapage.de, the German newspaper Berliner Zeitung BZ reported this past Wednesday (May 21) that Metallica will be the first band to perform at the new O2 World arena in Berlin on September 12. It should be noted, however, that Metallica has not yet officially announced any shows beyond its August 24 appearance at the Reading festival in Reading, UK.

As previously reported, Metallica has tapped Greg Fidelman — an engineer/producer who has worked with current Metallica producer Rick Rubin on albums for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, System Of A Down, Slipknot and Audioslave, among others — to mix its new CD, which is due out in September.

During a May 14 interview with The Pulse Of Radio, Ulrich said that the group hopes to wrap up work on the album in time for the Memorial Day weekend holiday. "It's pretty close," he said. "We've got four studio days next week to just patch up. If there's a last minute, you know, 'that needs this...' or — but pretty much done. Yeah, it's pretty much done. And then they start mixing the week after."

Lars also took part in a conference call on May 15 to promote this year's Bonnaroo festival, which Metallica will headline on June 13, Ulrich told reporters that Metallica recently met with a graphic designer to begin planning the new CD package, though there's no confirmed title for the album yet and the songs still have working names.

"We sort of promised ourselves that unlike all the records we made in the '90s, [which] were just completely stressed-out and just nutty, that we were gonna try and have a little more sane environment — and we've actually, surprising mostly to ourselves, been able to keep to that," Ulrich said, according to Billboard.com. "We've pretty much finished the music now, so all the next level stuff is just starting to go down."

The band next plays the Bonnaroo festival in mid-June, a series of European festivals, and the newly configured one-day Ozzfest this August in Dallas.

Thanks for the report to Blabbermouth.net.

Lars Ulrich revealed last week in Los Angeles that the band has all but finished recording its ninth studio effort, with only a few touch-ups to be completed this week before mixing begins. As for what the band's first CD since 2003's "St. Anger" sounds like, Ulrich told The Pulse of Radio it's hard for him to put a finger on it. "It's METALLICA, that I can tell you," he said. "My dad was up at the house a couple, three, four weeks ago so I played him a couple, three, four songs and I said, 'Well?' And he goes, 'It sounds like METALLICA.' And I don't know if you can define it, I mean we can sit and get into, you know, little definitions about that, but he just looked at me and said, 'That sounds like METALLICA.' And that's pretty cool."

Following months of rumors, Ozzfest organizers confirmed earlier this month through a post at the official web site that the festival, a touring event for more than a decade, will transform into a "destination festival" this summer. OZZY OSBOURNE and METALLICA will headline a one-day show on August 9 at Pizza Hut Park in Dallas. Also appearing on the main stage are SERJ TANKIAN, KORN singer Jonathan Davis, HELLYEAH, CAVALERA CONSPIRACY, SHADOWS FALL, APOCALYPTICA, IN THIS MOMENT and what's being billed as an "all-star tribute" to slain PANTERA and DAMAGEPLAN guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott.

METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich said of this year's Ozzfest, "In 1986 Ozzy gave us our first break by taking us out on tour here in America, so whenever we get the call to play or hang together, of course our response is 'F*ck yeah… just tell us when and where and we’ll be there. We're psyched about our first Ozzfest experience and looking forward to hanging with all our metal buddies on what surely will be a great f*cking day in Dallas."

Tour co-founder Sharon Osbourne said in the post, "We're going to be a stadium destination festival for now — we have gone past doing the sheds every summer. We've given everyone else the blueprint and we have to keep evolving Ozzfest. This is just the beginning; (promoter) AEG Live and I have a lot of new ideas for Ozzfest."

Last year's Ozzfest, which hit 25 cities, was a free event, with tickets handled through corporate sponsorship. The tour caused controversy by asking acts to play without getting paid, which many felt led to a weaker lineup.

New update from Mr Halfin

Saw Brad for breakfast, with a whining Pete. We all went to see Matt Sorum and Max Noce at the Sorum Noce store. Did some photos for a feature Pete's doing. Matt and Max gave me some nice black t-shirts with their logo.

Sat by the pool for a bit, said hello to Billy Bob Thornton. Kazuyo shit her pants and begged me to take a photo of Billy Bob and her. Spent the rest of the day at The Wiltern Theatre with Metallica. Shot soundcheck with Flea playing Fight Fire With Fire. I asked him if he knew Prisoner Of The Night (a Saxon Classic), he looked baffled. James played the riff...

Got Flea and James to pose for photos in the basement hallway. Went out to shoot the Billboard, the fans were friendly. Forgot I'm known for shooting Metallica.

Saw John and Darren from Scars On Broadway. And ran into Dave Grohl, drinking (surprise, surprise). He's got a nice surprise for you at his Wembley Stadium show.

The show was good to shoot, although I found the lights a bit weird. I realised I know the songs and what they're going to do. As I've now got a Nikon D3 I dug out my old 85mm fixed lens, I LOVE this lens. It's great to shoot with and I haven't used it for at least five years. You think more without a zoom lens.

Got loads of good stuff, shot behind them at the end with the crowd. Dave was still drinking and headbanging at the side of the stage, he was off to the Rainbow after to drink with Lemmy.

From Ross Halfin's Diary

Spent today working. Los Angeles is back to being Hotter Than Hell (I promised John Bionelli I'd say this). Started with the Stilettos, all-girl heavy rock-metal - well, decide for yourself.

Then did Metallica, for a whole load of different things.

Started off quite slow, they hadn't done any photos for nearly a year, so it took a while to gel. When it did it worked amazingly well. I forgot we work well together. I know what makes them look good and they understand what I need to get out of them. Lars had made a considerable effort with his wardrobe - it consisted of t-shirts with things like Girlschool, Saxon, Blue Oyster Cult, and my personal favourite, Riot. We even played Metal Church, Thin Lizzy (my ipod), after they had played Killers twice on the stereo. It was a fulfilling day.

Dave Grohl says not to have intended "Open Letter"

"Hey Everybody,

Just wanted to write a quick note to clear up this whole “Open letter to Metallica” fiasco……For the record, I never “wrote” anything to Metallica. I was asked by a journalist, at the end of a long interview (abut the Foo Fighters) to give a quick message to Metallica in the studio. So, I rattled that quote off the top of my head. No biggie, right? Somehow it became my “open letter” to the band, and now it’s been picked up by everyone from Blabbermouth to Rolling Stone (as if anyone really cares!). Now, it’s true that I’ve been a loyal fan of this band for 25 years, and I can’t wait to hear the new (bleep), but an “open letter” to the band?!!?? Nah. Not my style. I’d rather just text ‘em……

OK…….just needed to get that off my chest. Hope you guys are good. Thanks for coming out to the shows, they’ve been a blast. Only a few more before we crawl back into our cave and hibernate. It’s gonna be a loooooong winter…….

Dave"

Dave Grohl's open letter to Metallica

Former NIRVANA drummer and current FOO FIGHTERS frontman Dave Grohl has released the following "open letter" to METALLICA: "Dear METALLICA,

"Hey, it's Dave! Remember me? Yeah, I'm the guy that's been listening to your band faithfully since 1983. I bought your first album 'Kill 'Em All' from a mailorder catalogue called Under The Rainbow, I think. Actually I can't remember. It was 1983 for Christsakes! But that album changed my life and I've been listening to your albums ever since (even 'St Anger'!).

"I can't wait to hear the new shit, and no matter what you guys do I'll always be first one at the shop waiting to hear it. I'm sure you'll come out and blow everybody's fuckin' minds, because you're fuckin' METALLICA!

"Good luck. And don't release it until it's kick-ass.

"Yours, Dave Grohl.

"P.S. Are you finished recording the drums yet

Ozzfest in Dallas on August 9, 2008

You've been speculating for weeks now, and as www.ozzfest.com posted this morning, we will indeed be joining Ozzy, Serj, Hellyeah, Jonathan Davis, Apocalyptica, and lots of other cool bands in Dallas on Saturday, August 9, 2008 for Ozzfest at Pizza Hut Park. Click here for the full lineup.

Tickets go on sale on May 31 . . . more details to come. Met Club members, check www.metclub.com for more information about a presale for you.

Wait... one more

Our friend Flea asked us if we could squeeze in one more day in Los Angeles and we just couldn't say "no", so we're honored to partake in the annual "Hullabaloo" benefit concert for the Silverlake Conservatory of Music to be held at the Wiltern Theatre on Wednesday, May 14, 2008, along with our buddies Scars on Broadway. Flea and fellow musician Keith Barry founded the Silverlake Conservatory of Music in 2001 to help fill the void left by music education program cuts in public schools. Money raised by the benefit will go into scholarships for low income students who would otherwise be unable to afford instruments and/or lessons and will help expand the school's summer camp program and fund a new building. For more information, check out www.silverlakeconservatory.com.

Tickets go on sale on Sunday, May 11, 2008 at 10:00 AM through www.ticketmaster.com and will be $200. A limited number of VIP tickets at $500 will be available only for purchase at the Silverlake Conservatory of Music (3920 Sunset Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90039) or by calling 323-665-3363. VIP tickets include reserved Loge seating, giftbag, two drink tickets, and entry into the Silverlake Conservatory after party held at the Wiltern.

The next day we're going to head over to Irvine Meadows where our friends at radio station KROQ are hosting their annual shin-dig known as the Weenie Roast on Saturday, May 17, 2008. Ticket on sale date is yet to be determined, but we'll have more details for you as soon as we get 'em. And you just might want to keep watching this space 'cause you never know what else could come up this month...nudge, nudge, wink, wink...

The line up:

Metallica
The Offspring
The Raconteurs
Rise Against
Bad Religion
Pennywise
The Bravery
Scars On Broadway
Seether
Flogging Molly
Atreyu
MGMT
Flobots

New video footage

Video footage of METALLICA rehearsing the classic song "Creeping Death" in preparation for the band's upcoming spring/summer tour dates can be viewed below. The clip, which was apparently shot on May 2, 2008 at the group's "headquarters" in San Rafael, California, was previously released exclusively to the members of METALLICA's official fan club.

METALLICA's recently announced web site — MissionMetallica.com — where the band says it will offer fans a chance to "experience the [group's] new album before it's done," is scheduled to go "live" on May 12.

As previously reported, METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich told RollingStone.com that the band intends to explore "everything" in terms of selling its music once its current recording contract expires. But although the group's upcoming ninth studio album is its last with Warner Bros. Music, Ulrich said they would be hesitant to follow in the footsteps of U2 and MADONNA and sign a comprehensive "360 deal" with Live Nation. Ulrich explained, "We've never sold ourselves that way. No disrespect. We want to be as free a player as possible. We've been observing RADIOHEAD and Trent Reznor and in 27 years or however long it takes for the next record, we'll be looking forward to everything in terms of possibilities with the Internet."

Ulrich told The Pulse of Radio something similar when asked what the band will do once its contract is finished. "There's a bunch of possibilities out there," he said. "It's great to be able to have the choices, and it's great when you don't need the record company to sign the checks, you know what I mean? Then it sort of becomes a whole different thing. The landscape continues to change, you know, so we'll see."

Ulrich talked with RollingStone.com on April 19, as the band did an autograph session at an independent record store in northern California to celebrate Record Store Day. Ulrich called the group's participation a "no-brainer," adding, "The record store has been such a huge part of our lives. When I was 12, 14 years old in Denmark, the record store was the Holy Grail and the guy who worked there was my hero."

The new METALLICA album is tentatively due out in September, with U.S. tour dates possibly in the works for around the same time.

The band has scheduled a slew of European festival dates for May, June, July and August in addition to two U.S. shows, on May 16 at a radio festival in Tucson, Arizona and mid-June at the Bonnaroo Festival in Tennessee.

Amy Lee Denies Rumour

Amy Lee, vocalist in Evanescence, has denied any plans of collaborating with Metallica. She has posted a message on the band's official website saying the rumors are "not true."

Lee tells the online forum, "Could you please let everyone know that I am NOT going to be collaborating with Metallica? I have absolutely no idea where this rumor came from, but it is not true." Reports surfaced that Lee was set to lend her vocals to a new song of the heavy metal band, called "Last Life" from their new upcoming album.

Evanescence is an American rock band ffrom Arkansas formed in 1998 by singer/pianist Amy Lee and guitarist Ben Moody. After two EPs and a demo CD, the band released their first full-length album, Fallen, on Wind-up Records in 2003. Fallen sold more than 15 million copies worldwide and helped the band win two Grammy Awards. In 2006, the band released their second studio album, The Open Door, which has sold more than four million copies.

Record Store Day: report

IT WAS fitting really...what used to be a Tower Records in Mountain View, California, has become a Rasputin's Records, one of the oldest independent record stores in the Bay Area (it was founded in 1971)...and as we waited (the 'we' being some clubbers, some non-clubbers and us) it simple felt like the old days.

Hetfield family on Holiday!

source: Blabbermouth.net

  • METALLICA frontman James Hetfield was photographed earlier this week on the beach in Hawaii, where he is apparently vacationing with his wife Francesca and their three kids: Marcella Francesca, 6; Castor Virgil, 7; and Cali Tee, 9. More pictures can be found at East News.

METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich told England's Kerrang! magazine that the band will play songs from its upcoming new album this summer on at least one of its festival dates. Speaking about the band's recently announced headlining appearance at the UK's Reading and Leeds Festivals in late August, Ulrich said, "We're psyched to play some new songs. In fact, if we don't, then I give people permission to come and find me and slap me across the face! We're certainly planning on rolling out some of the new songs for the first time, but right now our focus is on finishing the record. As soon as that's out of the way, we'll be hitting the rehearsal room and getting to grips with playing these bastards live!"

METALLICA's yet-to-be-titled ninth studio album is tentatively due out in September. The band is said to be in the final stages of recording.

The Reading and Leeds Festivals take place on August 22-24. Other confirmed acts include RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE, SLIPKNOT, THE KILLERS, QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE and AVENGED SEVENFOLD.

  • Another announcement in English?

Greetings on a fine Thursday morning. To round out the English speaking portion of announcements, we add Dublin, Ireland to the mix with a show at Marlay Park on August 20. Joining us will be the always entertaining Tenacious D.

We're nearing the end . . . check back a little later today for one final update.

    Openers for second round announced

Since the second part of our little European summer vacation does not include any festival shows, guess what... we get to pick who we, and you, get to spend the day with. So we're psyched to share with you that our old friends in Down and our new friends in The Sword, one of our favorite bands of the last few years, have agreed to come along for the ride. Look for 'Tallica, Down, and The Sword starting on July 16 in Bergen, Norway through July 25 in Sofia, Bulgaria (except in Bucharest, where it will be just 'Tallica and The Sword). And as usual, another update coming in the next 48 hours relevant to all this... Source: metallica.com / metclub.com

  • Shock Horror; More shows in the US!

    Source: www.metallica.com

  • Shock!? Horror?!? Yes, one more show to be exact. The gears are starting to turn here at HQ and just as we're getting ready for our annual European summer vacation, our friends at radio station KFMA invited us to head over to Tucson, AZ for their big show at the Pima County Fairgrounds on Friday, May 16. We're looking forward to sharing the stage with our friends Apocalyptica, Scars on Broadway, and Flobots. Tickets go on sale on Saturday, April 5, a little earlier for Fan Club members. We have a couple more things lurking, so keep watching here . . . maybe even later today.
  • Record store day

    source: www.metallica.com

Is it an internationally recognized holiday? No, but it should be! We are honored and proud to be participating in Record Store Day on April 19 as hundreds of indy record stores across the country will be celebrating what you already know... the coolest place in any town to hang out is your local record store. So with that said, we'll be hangin' out that day at the Rasputin Music store in Mountain View, CA starting at 2:00 PM. Come on down to the store, say "hi," bring some stuff for us to sign, and in the spirit of supporting your local independent record store, maybe you'll want to do a little shopping while you're there.

Now, the fine print: In our humble effort to make sure that no one is rushed along and that we get a chance to chat with everyone, 400 wristbands will be distributed. You may start lining up at 8 AM...the store opens at 10 AM and will begin passing out wristbands at that time. Met Clubbers, check www.metclub.com for more info on how you can be at the front of the line.

We look forward to seeing our friends at Rasputin and catching up with those of you that can make your way to the store that day. See you then!
